Paint Calculator

Walls (and the ceiling if you like) minus doors and windows, times the number of coats.

Updated 2026-10-20 · Based on: coverage figures from paint and drywall makers (USG).

How to use the Paint Calculator

  1. Enter the room length, width and wall height.
  2. Type the number of doors and windows.
  3. Choose 2 coats for a colour change, 1 for a refresh.
  4. Check the coverage on your can (350–400 ft² per gallon is typical) and read the gallons.

Formula

Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height − 20 ft² per door − 15 ft² per window.

Gallons = area × coats ÷ coverage per gallon. Metric: litres = m² × coats ÷ m² per litre (about 10).
